Sun Microsystems Inc.said Wednesday it agreed to acquire MySQL AB, developer of one of the world’s fastest growing open source databases, for about $1 billion.
Santa Clara-based Sun (NASDAQ:JAVA) said the acquisition accelerates its position in enterprise IT to now include the database market.
With millions of global deployments — including Palo Alto-based Facebook Inc and Mountain View-based Google Inc — MySQL “will bring synergies to Sun that will change the landscape of the software industry by driving new adoption of MySQL’s open source database in more traditional applications and enterprises,” the company said.
