Website Development

How much does a website cost?

The cost of your website will vary, depending on the size and functionality required. Our estimates are based on our hourly rate and include the planning, design, setup and launch.  The majority of our websites are built in a CMS framework to allow non-technical staff to edit most of the content themselves.

A simple website includes:

  • Installation of wordpress
  • Customizing a theme
  • Simple plugins to:
    • share posts and pages
    • a contact form
    • event calendar
    • newsletter signup
    • gallery or slideshow.
  • Approximately 10 pages of content
  • Security features to deter hackers.

All of our websites include installation of Google Analytics, a CMS (wordpress) that you can update yourself, testing, SEO readiness and client training.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is an online, open source creation tool.  It is supported by a large community of developers.  It is one of the easiest and most powerful content management systems on the web.  Approximately 25% of all websites are built in WordPress.

WordPress empowers you to maintain your own site with little technical know how.

Companies that use WordPress range from small businesses to fortune 500.  Many of the most popular blogs are done in WordPress.

How does the web development process work?

A typical website design process includes:

Planning:  This is the stage that requires the most interaction between us and you.  We get to know your business and understand your needs and desires.  We discover your goals, target audience, obtain detailed feature requests and get as much relevant information that we can gather.

Contract:  Our statement of work lays out who is responsible for what and defines deadlines.

Design – the design stage moves the information outlined in the planning stage into reality.  Once we have your approval for a framework, we begin inputting your content and specific pages.

Pre-Launch – once each page is completed and contains your content, we test and verify links and functionality. We also do some cross browser checking and ensure mobile readiness.

Launch – The site is released for public viewing and we do any “polishing” that needs to be done.

Post-Launch – the site is handed off to you, and we provide training and transfer any source files and copyrights to you.  Final payment is made and the project is closed.

If you host with us, we provide technical support and some maintenance.

How long does it take to build a website?

Many factors determine the length of time it will take to complete your website.  Some sites can be done in 2 weeks, others 2 or 3 months.  For the average web site we usually estimate 4-6 weeks.

Much of this is dependant on the communication and responsiveness of both parties.

Do I have to host my website with you?

While we do host the majority of our clients’ sites, we do not require clients to host their websites with us.  Should you opt to use your current hosting company or a different host, it is up to you to ensure that the website we build is compatible with your hosting companies capabilities.

What do I need to start a website?

The 3 basic elements to getting your business on the internet are:

  • Domain Name
  • Web hosting
  • Website

Website Hosting

What is Website Hosting?

Your website needs a place to live.  If you think of the Internet as a large apartment complex, your website rents one of those apartments. Your address (your domain name) is what visitors type in to get to your apartment.

A webhosting company provides the technology and space that allows your website to be viewed by the public.

What types of hosting do you offer?

The majority of our clients are hosted on a shared server.  That means that your website shares a server with other websites.  Shared hosting is the most affordable option because the cost to operate the server is spread out among many sites.

Our shared hosting environment is somewhat unique.  We own two servers that have a load balancer in front of them.  This means that if one server is busy, site visitors will automatically be sent to the quieter server.  Our servers are also very powerful.

We also offer dedicated hosting.  Dedicated hosting is where you have the server all to yourself.  Your website is the only one that is using the servers resources.  This is a good choice for larger sites that require high security.

What is included in Website Hosting?

Website hosting includes:

  • A place for your website to live.
  • Email
  • Daily backups
  • Bandwidth
  • One click installation of the most popular software
  • Cpanel access
  • E-commerce ready

Other Web Hosting Options:

  • SSL
  • Dedicated IP
  • Reseller hosting packages

Our servers are monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our monitoring stations are setup to query our servers every 5 minutes and report any problems to our administrators.

Environmentally Responsible Web hosting

In 2013, datacenters in the United States used 91 billion kilowatt hours.  That is enough electricity to power Manhattan for two years straight.  (source Natural Resources Defence Council)

Our datacenter partner is energy star certified.

The sustainable data center includes a roof-top solar array, backed by hydro-electric renewable power sources and cutting-edge cooling technologies that minimize energy consumption. The green data center is one of only two ENERGY STAR® certified data centers in New York and one of just 39 in the entire United States.

In essence this means, we utilize a datacenter that leaves a zero carbon footprint.

Do I have to host my website with you?

While we do host the majority of our clients’ sites, we do not require clients to host their websites with us.  Should you opt to use your current hosting company or a different host, it is up to you to ensure that the website we build is compatible with your hosting companies capabilities.
